driving almost impossible and driving almost impossible and cancel dozens of flights. cancel dozens of captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday december 10, 2012. good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning the lines of communication are open, but time is running out for a resolution to the impending fiscal cliff. president obama and house speaker john boehner met behind closed doors sunday. it was their first face-to-face meeting since november 6, the election day, and now it look like some republicans may be breaking ranks. susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest. hi, susan. good morning to you. >> hi. many on capitol hill are encouraged by the weekend talks, but to get a deal done on time, apparently action this week is said to be critical. and now we have the president heading out on the road again. president obama leaves d.c. today, headed to michigan to talk to auto workers, part of his strategy to generate public

support for his plan to avoid the fiscal cliff, the tax hikes and spending cuts due to kick in at year end. the president and house speaker john boehner met one on one at the white house on sunday. while no details were leaked, a rarity for washington, we do know the main sticking points remain. raising taxes on high earners and making cuts to entitlement programs like medicare. >> you know, they started their tango now, and any time you start a tango, you have to get it done. >> more republicans are accepting the idea that wealthy americans will get a tax raise hike. >> there are a group of folks looking at this realizing we don't have a lot of cards before year end. >> but others remain opposed to raising taxes on the top 2%. >> the president wants the rates to go up. that doesn't solve the problem, and we don't want to be back here in another year, another ten years trying to answer the

question. >> the deadline for an agreement is closer than you might think. many here on capitol hill tell us that the president tell us they have to reach a deal by the end of this week in order for congress to have enough time to vote on the bill. >> i'm hopeful it doesn't go to the last day. >> president obama has asked congress to work through their holiday break if no deal is reached before then. now, one more thing to pile on here in addition to those automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. government jobless benefits for the long-time unemployed are set to expire. terrell? >> susan mcginnis starting us off in washington this morning. susan, good to see you. thank you so much. in the midwest, heavy snow is beginning to taper off, but rolling in behind it is bitterly cold temperatures. parts of minnesota have gotten about 16 inches of snow. minneapolis and st. paul declared the first snow emergency, and blizzard and storm warnings have been issued from parts of south dakota to wisconsin. hundreds of accidents have been reported and over 150 flights canceled.

overseas the family of the doctor rescued in afghanistan say they're thankful for his safe return. dr. dilip joseph was captured. they sent in a special operations team on monday. one member of the special ops team was killed. president obama said the servicemember gave his life for the fellow american. the fighting in syria has spilled over into lebanon. there are reports four people died in tripoli on sunday, 12 others were wounded. also u.s. and russian diplomats met in moscow again sunday trying to broker a cease-fire. as david martin reports there's growing concern that al qaeda is influencing the rebels. >> reporter: videos set to show the aftermath of a syrian air strike shows graphic evidence of a life-and-death battle, which high-level diplomats say is bad and getting worse. despite its air power, the assad regime appears increasingly defensive. it includes a global number of

radical islamists. >> the jihadees are getting big and bigger. the longer the conflict goes on, the bigger it will get. >> reporter: the gee ha des are an offshoot of al qaedas in iraq. according to jeffrey white, a former analyst for the defense intelligence agency, they are now turning the tide against the assad regime. >> they are very good fighters. they are -- they give the rebels a combat edge. they're quite willing to die, they fight on all key fronts, they're involved in many of the key actions. these are not people we want to win. >> reporter: but the rebels making inroads on damascus itself, monitoring of syrian bases like there where chemical weapons are stored has detected evidence the assad regime may be preparing to use them in a last-ditch attempt to save themselves, an act the obama administration has warned could trigger military intervention. worst-case scenarios are threatening to become reality.

>> it's not going to be a clean outcome in the best of circumstances, and now it will be chaotic and messing. >> reporter: the u.s. is helping to organize the opposition's military command, and later this week is expected to officially recognize its political leadership. what impact that has on the outcome of the civil war remains to be seen. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. in egypt, opponents of president mohamed morsi are calling for another massive protest tomorrow. thousands of demonstrators took to the streets sunday. they're demanding morsi can sell the december 15th vote to the draft resolution. they're also rejecting last month's decree which pretty much makes morsi a dictator. south africans are ancient ul anxiously awaiting word.

the 94-year-old anti-partied icon has been in the hospital since saturday and officials refuse to say anything about his ailment on what tests he's ung going. mark phillips reports. >> reporter: when a man who is a savior of the country is rushed to the hospital, it's a question of hold the front page. nelson mandela was brought to this hospital for what's being described as a routine visit, test, nothing to be alarmed about the south african government says. but there's no such thing as routine for a 94-year-old man who's known to be in frail health, and people are really worried. >> hope he gets well soon and back strong again soon. >> we hope everything goes well and that this comes out positive. >> reporter: normally mandela spends his time at his home village about 500 miles away. this was him at his 94th birthday celebration last july where he seemed physically well the mentally a little detamped at the time. but now he's in the hospital

again, and a security cordon has been set up. south african's current president jacob zuma who visited mandela says he looks well and is getting good care, but the reverence for mandela is such that details of his condition are rarely discussed in public. and there have been several recent health scares, chest infection, abdominal pain, a prostate problem. each time mandel la is hospitalized it's cause for concern, yet each time he's managed to beat the odds. the same kind of resilience he's shown all his life. people are hoping he does it again. mark phillips, cbs news, victoria. the australian de-jace who hospital where the duchess was staying speak out for the first time. last week the deejays pretended to be the queen and prince charles and spoke to the nurse who cared for the duchess. this morning they say they're

deeply sorry for their prank. >> the joke was always on us, not anyone else. it wasn't about trying to fool someone. i mean we just assumed with the voices that we put on, you know, we were going to get told off and that was the gag. >> the deejays went on to say they couldn't have imagined that the prank would have ended with a death. the show has been pulled off indefinitely and are undergoing counseling. the music world is mourning the loss of mexican american singer jenni rivera. a family says her plane crashed sunday. officials there say there were six other people onboard and there were no survivors. as teresa garcia tells us, rivera was at the peak of her career. >> reporter: a helicopter hovers over the wreckage of a plane that authorities believe was carrying singer jenni rivera. >> the plane, it's totaled.

calling on u.s. politicians to find a solution to the nation's financial woes and fast. christine lagarde said lawmakers need to address the country's debt, the deficit, and the fiscal cliff and quickly to avoid the uncertainty from affecting the global economy. she suggested a balanced approach, increasing revenue, while also cutting spending. a new survey shows pay for private college prnts continues to climb. they studied data from 2010. it shows medial compensation rose to about $400,000, up nearly 3%. and james bond's fought his way back to the top of the box office. "skyfall" made $11 million. "rise of the guardian" finished a close second with $10.5 million, and in third place, "twilight saga:breaking dawn"

new york city mayor michael bloomberg is reportedly considering buying the "financial times" group. there's speculation the publisher of the "financial times" is about to lose two of its top executives and the paper could be up for sale. the paper is estimated to be worth about $1.2 billion and includes half interest in the "economists" magazine. there is plenty of interests in the comings and going in washington.

15% slowdown in orders next year. >> it could be june before we start seeing orders, and if that's true, i will end up laying off people. >> reporter: hudson's also concerned about taxes. because his profits are treated as income, that puts him over $250,000 a year, the level at which president obama wants taxes to go up. >> i'm supposedly a rich guy? i don't think so. i think we ought to pay our share, but that could have an impact to the point that i may have to lay off one or two more people. >> reporter: the financial impact of the affordable health care act is also a question mark as the plan slowly phases in. >> i believe in families and supporting the employees, but, again, it's a big unknown. we looked at whether it might be beneficial to cancel the insurance and pay the penalties. >> reporter: like any military man, hudson is running every scenario to stay in business. >> it's really sad, isn't it, that we've got to fight our own
